Metallics have often been ‘typecast’ as a ‘wardrobe staple’ during the Christmas season, yet their wear-ability can translate into ‘non-formal’ wear too. The key to wearing metallics during the day is to incorporate shiny fabrics but still keep your look ‘simple’. In other words your metallic look needs to have a slightly undressed undertone, making it more wearable during the day. Have a bronze high shine dress that you would love to wear during the day but have no idea how to? The key to nailing a high shine look is to look a little messy but still retain a little glamour and street smart elegance. For example a pleated midi skirt might traditionally be seen as a night-time staple. Instead of teaming a midi skirt with a ‘feminine trench’ and stilettos consider adding a futuristic bomber jacket and high shine flats for a ‘daytime’ twist.
How To Wear Metallics During The Day
1.Wear Metallic Accents Instead Of A Head To Toe Metallic ‘Look’
Sometimes a head to toe metallic look can be too ‘much for a daytime look. Instead of reaching for every high shine fabric in your wardrobe, just incorporating one or two shiny fabrics can help keep the high shine trend to a minimum. This 70’s ‘Retro Futuristic’ aesthetic is inspired by the late 60’s obsession with space age couture, which although became deconstructed by 70’s obsession with loose clothing, elements of 60’s space age still remained. Note this burgundy metallic fringed bag; the fringe is 70’s, while the high shine belongs to the 60’s. The 70’s was of course a decade that has been hailed as ‘experimental’, ‘fashion forward’ and relaxed, yet much of its inspiration came from the 60’s. The late 1960’s were obsessed with short hemlines and while the 70’s is reputed for the return of the midi skirt, the 60’s mini was still a popular choice.
While I might not be wearing a mini skirt, the pleated high shine mini culottes is reminiscent of Courrèges’s bold and graphic 60’s silhouette, although the colours are predominantly 70’s. Courrèges’s preferred a monochromatic palette whereas the 70’s is famed for its love affair with earth tones, thus the inclusion of burgundy versus the metallic shorts is a palatable combination. In other words creating a 70’s look with 60’s high shine accent hues means that it retains the ‘fashion forward’ ethos of the two stylish decades.

2.Mix Textures To Avoid Looking Like An Astronaut
When it comes to nailing a ‘daytime’ look, mixing ‘formal’ and informal textures is often the solution. For example if you start with a high-shine fabric as a focal point and add more softer textures like cashmere or cotton, it will make the metallic look more ‘day-time ready’. In the look below I have used the ‘luxurious’ material velvet and faux fur but made the look less formal by pairing a purple fedora with aubergine faux leather gloves. The inclusion of faux leather, faux fur and velvet versus the singular metallic clutch helps keep the look ‘fresh and modern’.

3. Add Pastel Accents To Soften The Metallic Look
Not all metallics have to be in a monochromatic or neutral colour palette. Pastels are a great way of softening a ‘high shine look’ and colours such as baby pink or rose quartz are the perfect accent hue to subtly introduce metallics into the ootd. For example the two tone rose gold and pink gloves versus the two tone blush and peach metallic collar duster jacket makes the perfect metallic combination. Instead of creating a futuristic vibe, the pastels are reminiscient of a 50’s silhouette, which is far more accessible to wear during the day than a full high shine look.

4. Keeping It Semi-Casual And Alternate Between Formal/Informal Wear
If you want to try a full shine look during the day, it is a good idea to combine elements of both formal and informal wear. Although midi skirts are traditionally seen as a formal ‘hero piece’, the 70’s made midi skirts a passable clothing style to wear during all sartorial occasions. Thus the key to making the midi skirt less formal is all in the footwear and outerwear that you choose. The futuristic silver bomber hails from the 90’s and like all 90’s trends helps dress down any look while the Mary Jane silver 60’s flats makes a far cry from modern stilettos or platforms. Its comfortable, on trend and best of all will still look dressy enough for any occasion.

Trend Alert:
Rose Gold, Silver or Gold Boots
Not all outfits have to be worn with heels and luckily high shine boots have just as much lust appeal with half the pain. Rose gold boots are luxe but because they are boots are far more casual than metallic heels.

Metallic Accessories
From metallic jewellery to metallic bags, not all outfits have to use high shine fabrics. In fact for a modern update on the 60’s space chic look, adding a high shine bag is far more effective than a full high shine look.

Metallic Flats
Metallic flats or Mary Janes are blocky or tubular, making it a great premise for a high shine look.

Bomber Jackets might normally be in a suede or puffa format but a high shine jacket will help you tap into the high shine trend.

You’ve got lots of great ideas but you need to be going out somewhere to get dressed up … and not just the grocery store, or meeting a friend for coffee at the bagel store. You’re right that I’ve got some shing clothes to wear for Christmas & can’t recall anything else … but my granddaughter loves sparkly shoes & just bought her sparkly Crocks (silver) lined with pink fleece. She loves them!
Fatima Torres says
I really like the metallic look on you. The skirts are adorable. The silver one is my favorite.
Author Brandi Kennedy says
Great tips and I liked several of the looks you showed off in this post – but for me personally, the pastel look more in line with the 50’s era was much more appealing. It was elegant and very lovely but still understated in just the right way. My teenaged daughter, on the other hand, would likely have gone with the first look, or even the second, as both were “louder” and more attention-grabbing.

Krysten says
I really enjoy the history that you put along with why you are pairing certain looks. I love the 60s and 70s era for clothing but have never really thought I could pull over metallics.
I think one of the reasons that I didn’t think I could is I thought that it did have to be head to toe metallics, not accents like you have done with a lot of these pieces.
I think that I might be able to pull off the pastel pieces with the metallics, I’m going to have to give it a go!
Thank you for this awesome post!

“To keep from looking like an astronaut .. ” you made me smile. Your post reminded me so much of my daughter. When she was in sixth grade, she begged me for a metallic skirt. Me being a boring jeans/white tee mom tried to talk her out of it. Nothing doing .. I tell you what .. she figured out how to make it look really pretty when she went to school. To this day she still wears shiny things, or carries a shiny purse, something.
