‘In a world where violence and havoc thrive there is a secret daydream, Where the nymphs frolic in tranquil fountains and the mermaids walk on land, The sweet whistle of the waves lapping shore and the sharks are lulled asleep, The world fades to pink and the sea turns into delectable candyfloss,Munching on the ‘pinkness’ of the sea the greedy goblin turns into rose gold,A million pink crystals are all that is left of him, no green in sight,All that is left is pink residue on empty houses, there is no crime here, all is free,Free to love without disdain, pink is not just for girls but boys love pink too,In the pinkness the rose gold melts into reality and the hearts of all humanity,Our hearts are pink cardiovascular chambers wrapped in rose gold, it jangles softly, and in our metal hearts lies a new beginning; Kaytie Wu’.
In my pink daydream, I am covered in a sea of rose gold, where the grass is pinker on the other side and the light at the end of the candyfloss tunnel is made up of Kaytie Wu. Mellow, streamlined and aesthetically perfect, it seems only fitting that Kaytie Wu’s elegance transcends into its rose gold ‘Geo Range’. A new and innovative series from Kaytie Wu, the minimalist ‘Geo’ collection goes by the philosophy that ‘less is more’ using high quality metals and Swarovski crystals to exude effortless 90’s minimalism. Using a streamlined artistic aesthetic, Kaytie Wu’s jewellery draws inspiration from the simple tranquility of ‘water flow’ connected to the Greek deity Amphitrite, whose role as sea goddess reflected the changing role of women in society. Amphitrite-whose consort was Poseidon, became synonymous with the ‘symbolic representation’ of the sea and whilst diminished by poets as a mere ‘symbol’ , Amphitrite reigned proudly as the ‘third one who encircles [the sea]’ and was ‘entirely confined in her authority to the sea’. Amphitrite’s endurance against the tests of time and rare ‘association’ with her husband for the purposes of ‘worship and art’ meant that she was an independent if misunderstood goddess which largely informed the construction of the GEO collection. Strong female role models who are connected to ‘water’ reflect the ‘independence and endurance’ of modern women, adding mellowness, harmony and elegance to the Geo collection.
Proud to represent female figures as a point of inspiration, Kaytie Wu’s Rose Gold Line Crystal Necklace andRose Gold Line Crystal Bracelet fuses the independence of ‘Amphitrite’ with the wisdom of the Neolithic ‘Earth Mother’, whose two ‘fierce energies’ meld to create the driving force behind the Geo Collection. Both bracelet and necklace use a ‘horizontal crystal line’ which symbolizes ‘life on earth as a binary’ chronological process beginning in ‘birth’ and ending in ‘death. The cyclical motions that we go through in life inspired Kaytie to use stretched out horizontal axis’s to examine the dual nature of female existence and how females connection to natural elements could be used to ‘inform’ and ‘mould’ the Geo series. The bracelet uses two horizontal parallel lines creating a rectangular construction which develops into a perfect ‘circle’ linking the bracelet to horizontal lines. While the horizontal axis’s are connected to the Neolithic Earth Mother and her symbol as ‘life on earth’ the use of a circle is a theological symbol of ‘boundary’ and ‘enclosure’ which ‘completes’ the ‘returning’ cycle of regeneration and rebirth. The symbolism is clear, the Rose Gold Line Crystal Bracelet is a cyclical motif for rebirth and should be worn to represent or convey the memories of lost loved ones, to commemorate new beginnings or begin again as a new person. For me the symbol of birth and regeneration would be worn to commemorate my Grandma who passed away two years ago and was the living embodiment of female strength and independence. The bracelet shows me that the traits of my deceased grandma will manifest in people that I meet in the future and present and will show me how my loss will never fade but will manifest throughout various cyclical motions in my life.
Although the horizontal axis’s that merge into a ‘circle enclosure’ represent ‘death and rebirth’ its maximalist counterpart the Rose Gold Line Crystal Necklace uses a misshapen, slightly bent central core which folds into two parallel vertical axis’s. The stunted horizontal line is representative of flow and dance through a composition;curved lines are sensuous, organic, and rhythmic whereas vertical lines are ‘structured’ and a diminutive of humankind’s position in the animal kingdom. The organic mother (curved line) and the spiritual or temporal God ( vertical line) both form the backbone of our society and represent ‘base’ or as we would call it home. The chaotic yet structured energy of the place that we would call home is embedded in the Rose Gold Line Crystal necklace, whose elegant structured minimalism is enveloped by two free-running vertical axis’s. The connection between ‘organic fluidity’ and ‘temporal rigidity’ relates to my inability to make decisions and preference for ‘spontaneous living’ but desire to keep everything within a ‘routine’ framework. As humans we are logistic but indecisive and is these paradoxes that made Kaytie Wu’s Geo necklace and bracelet an attractive collection.
Do You Believe There Is Symbolism In Jewelry?
Ali Rost says
Absolutely. My wedding ring symbolizes not only love for my husband .. but the start of a new chapter in my life. I met him during a season of rebuilding and am happier now than I’ve ever been before. x
