After happily gorging on Degustabox’s January Edition , the promise of a February subscription box was enough to give me a wet dream. After waiting like what seemed eons ( it was 48 hours FYI but I am a hungry beast) I hungrily delved into my box of dreams and almost passed out in delight. If I thought January’s box was a 7.5/10, then February’s box was most definitely a 9! From chocolate banana chips to wine, the secret creators at Degustabox HQ, clearly had me in mind when they were creating the box. While last months box seemed to be more ‘snack focused’, the month of love was centered around beverages , with the odd bag of sweets waiting to be eaten.
The most difficult thing about shooting ‘food related’ posts is that I always seem to half-eat the products before I even shoot them, which is why many of the photos below are not in their original packaging but what’s a girl to do? After all when I have to wait a week to shoot food, you can’t expect me to wait all that time can you? But I digress, despite being a naughty blogger, this was definitely the best box that I have received from Degustabox so far and if you want ‘in’ on the action then use my code 0V84X to receive the box for £5.99 instead of £12.99.
Maui & Sons dark chocolate coated banana chips
At first I was a little hesitant to try the banana chips as I am not keen on dark chocolate, due to its bitter taste. Yet I was pleasantly surprised, the dark chocolate was sweetened by the natural sugars of the banana chips and married well to create a hybrid flavour. There was no bitterness and the chips were moreish enough to melt in the mouth. When combined with salt honey popcorn [see below] the crunch of the kernels integrated with the soft but crunchy chocolate banana trips, creating a foodgasm that only seasoned foodies would know.
Would I buy It Again?
Yes, despite being dark chocolate, the lack of bitterness and the right level of natural sugars meant that it was a sweet treat that I could pig out on without feeling guilty. In other words winner winner, chicken dinner!
Willy Chase’s Fitcorn: Salted Honey
I am a huge lover of ‘salted popcorn’ which is the flavour I choose when going to the cinema and was intrigued to try the ‘salted honey’ flavour. At first the taste of honey was barely there and popcorn seemed to taste only of salt. After a few rummages the taste of honey was subtle but added to the flavour of salt perfectly and it was the bits at the bottom that gave the most pleasure.Wonderful on their own or combined with other snacks [see above] the ‘Fitcorn’ had natural ingredients with no ‘artificial nasties’, something which appealed to me greatly. It was difficult to not eat the fitcorn all in one go but once my shoot had come to a climax I am not joking when I say I ate the whole bag in 10 minutes flat.
Would I Buy It Again?
I would have liked a little more honey to balance out the salt but the second half of the bag was enough to convince me that I needed Fitcorn in my life permanently!
New York Delhi’s Americanos
Because I can’t have caffeine I didn’t want to chance trying out these ‘Americanos’ so my human guinea pig ( I mean photographer) was more than happy to oblige. And when I say ‘happy to oblige’ he did a Faded Spring and starting eating it before they had been photographed, oops. Here is what he said
” Despite reminding me of ‘gravy granules’ the Americanos were quite pleasant and gave off a strong taste of coffee. While it might not be to many peoples taste, I enjoyed it because it reminded me of Expressos and Americanos which I drink anyway. For those who like lighter coffees like Ana i.e. Lattes and cappuccinos this might not be the snack for you”.
Would I Buy It Again?
Unfortunately not as I can’t have caffeine but it smelt good at least. My photographer enjoyed them but he said he probably wouldn’t go out of his way to buy them, unless he was given them free again .
Diablo no added sugar chocolate covered wafer
Ok, confession #2 I am sorry to inform you that sadly I don’t have a photo of the wafer and that is because (you guessed it) I ate it before my shoot. It was just looking at me with its cute little wrapper begging to be eaten so the only way to put it out of its misery was to eat it. It was well worth the sneaky nibble and despite having no added sugar it didn’t taste chalky or like cardboard as many other ‘no added sugar’ products seem to taste. I was prepared to take a tiny nibble and then fake a shoot where my half eaten chocolate bar was in my mouth but that didn’t happen. I felt guilty for a split second and then proceeded to eat the whole thing. Oops I did it again!
Would I Buy It Again?
I would buy 300 of them and store them in a safe in case of famine. Read as ‘study session’ where I can’t be bothered to leave my room!
Bebeto Cheesecake Gummies
Due to containing ‘beef gelatin’ my photographer happily sampled the gummies for me and had nothing but glowing praise. He stated that the gummies ‘felt seasoned with real juicy flavour and was different to the average sweet that was pumped with artificial sweeteners and chemicals’. In short he adored the ‘subtle juicy flavour’ and loved the cute ‘cheesecake design even more.
Would I Buy It Again?
For me no due to the gelatin which I can’t have but it would be a great sweet treat to get my photographer through our intensive shoots.
Bebeto Candy Crush gummy mix
While game enthusiasts might be more familiar with the retro game format, the cutesie gummies tasted like mini bites of heaven according to my photographer. Again containing ‘beef gelatin’, there was a variety of sweets, ranging from the sherbet pipe cleaner to fruit gums, all of which seemed to be incredibly sticky but my photographer didn’t seem to mind. He stated that the sweets were ‘soggy’ but made the sweets taste even more ‘sugary’, something which he enjoys in a sweet mix.
Would I Buy It Again
For my photographer yes as he quite literally licked his fingers clean once he had polished off the entire packet!
Peppersmith Dental Mints & Peppersmith Gum
Proven to aid fresher breath, healthier gums and ward against bacteria, the dental mints and gum had a strange aftertaste that was not too dissimilar to ‘toothpaste’ but nevertheless I enjoyed it. It left a cooling sensation in my mouth and was ideal to chew after snacks or main meals.
Would I Buy It Again
It is lovely to chew on after eating anything with garlic in it and despite the strange aftertaste, its benefits outweigh the cons so the answer is affirmative.
Kakubuto Noodles: Vegetable Laska
As a fan of Asian cuisine I was hoping that the noodles would be different from the ‘super noodle varieties’ that were readily available in supermarkets. After pouring boiling water I waited several minutes with baited breath. The first sip was tentative and I was a little disappointed with the flavour, as the sauce tasted ‘watery’ rather than creamy like ‘laska’s’ are meant to taste. However I spoke too soon as after 5 minutes the flavours began to come through and the spices in the laska thickened in a divine coconut sauce. After a shaky start, I devoured the noodles, sauce and all, wishing that there were more noodles to gorge on.
Would I Buy It Again
Asian food is by far my favourite cuisine and the noodles plus the sauce were quite authentic to ‘traditional taste’, which took me by surprise. It was not starchy and the vegetable seasoning was plentiful , so the only answer would be a big fat yes! Plus I would love to try the other flavors and they are gluten free too.
Heinz No Added Sugar ‘Beanz’
I never really noticed the taste of sugar in the ‘original beans’ but the absence was noticeable in the ‘no sugar’ variety, which needed sea salt to liven up the taste. That being said, the small portions are travel friendly and made a surprisingly delicious accompaniment to a chickpea and garlic pasta dish. The flavour of the sauce is slightly bland but with sea salt tasted delicious.
Would I Buy It Again?
I would probably stick with the normal Heinz Beanz but as my Aunty is diabetic I might buy a few to take home to her, when I visit next.
Willy’s Apple Cider Vinegar
My aunty who is a lover of all natural remedies swears by apple cider vinegar so I was quite excited to receive a vial in my February box. While health benefits include soothing itchy throats and beating exhaustion, I used ACV in a quick delicious cous cous salad and it complemented the grainy texture of the cous cous perfectly!
Would I Buy It Again?
I normally use balsamic vinegar when it comes to salads but the fresh, tart flavour of the apple made a welcome change and would be ideal in many main meals.
Koko dairy free alternative
Made from coconut milk extract I was a little hesitant about trying ‘dairy free milk’, particularly when soya is not my cup of tea. However I was pleasantly surprised. The blend of water stops the coconut milk base from being too creamy and tasted quite good in cereal, porridge and even in decaf coffee. With normal full fat milk, drinking too much makes my IBS and acid reflux flare up, so the dairy free alternative was a welcome change and stopped my stomach bloating.
Would I Buy It Again?
Although I prefer the taste of normal milk, I can’t have too much of it as it does hurt my stomach so this would be ideal in porridge and cereals were full fat milk seems to hurt my stomach the most. Plus Koko even tastes delicious on its own and is the best dairy free alternative that I have found to date!
Just Bee Honey Water in Blueberry
Back when ‘Blogger Hangout’ were still running, they had arranged a ‘food stall hangout’ where different brands came with samples and Just Bee was one of them. I loved it then and I still love it now; half way between juice and water, the refreshing drink deliciously blends honey with blueberry to sate the palate wonderfully.
Would I Buy It Again?
I used to buy it every week and still buy it at least once a month now so having a free sample was definitely rewarding me for being a loyal customer.
Double Dutch Cucumber & Watermelon Premium Mixer
The cucumber water would be ideal in cocktails but since the only alcoholic beverages I can make is beer and G & T-which I am not a fan of- I decided to make a ‘soft drink version’ by blending the cucumber mixer with ‘cranberry juice’ which surprisingly tasted quite refreshing. I was unsure how the cucumber and cranberry would mix but the clean, almost earthy flavour of the cucumber integrated with the sharp tart cranberry fairly well.
Would I Buy It Again?
Yes, only next time I want to use it in a cocktail, preferably as a base for a home made mojito, as they are my favourite cocktails of all time!
Coldpress 100% fruit juice: Berry Beets
As someone who is not keen on beetroot I was unsure as to how the berries would taste with something I clearly loathed. Yet, once chilled and crushed with ice, the berry beets was actually not too bad and made a refreshing drink after work. Even without ice, the berries are sweet enough to overpower the earthiness of the beetroot, which made the tentative sips become big greedy gulps.
Would I Buy It Again?
Despite initial impressions the Berry Beets tasted ‘fresh’ and full of flavour, while the balance between sweetness and earthiness, created a drink that soothed my poor sore throat.
Blossom Hill Fruit Bloom with hints of Summer Fruits
As someone who is a cocktail and rose wine drinker, I was genuinely excited to see Blossom Hill in my February box. Despite its similarities to rose, the summer berries shone through and married pleasantly with the light, bubbly fizz. The summer fruits is not too ‘sweet’ but even a few gulps of the delicious wine is enough to make me feel lightheaded so is ideal in small quantities, unless you want to get drunk ‘fast’. The light taste makes it the ideal drink for any occasion while the fruits led to a ‘refreshing taste palette’
Would I Buy It Again?
Saving the best drink until last, the summer fruits wine tasted delightful with Quorn Spaghetti Bolganese. I polished off the wine after a few days and my glass is demanding a refill and fast!
Best Product
It was tricky to choose between the Blossom Hill and Banana Chips, but the ultimate winner has to be Blossom Hill.
Box Rating: 8.5/10
