When I first started blogging in 2015, I was and still am a passionate writer, chronicling my painful childhood stories, my struggles with mental health and taking my readers on a humorous journey into my dating escapades. I had no idea how to market my brand, know what my audience wanted and above all wasn’t looking at my blog as a business but rather a passion project where I could upload content onto a visual and written online diary, which would become memories in years to come.

Within a week of blogging I had my first blogging opportunity, and six months in I was able to increase my traffic, had grown a sizeable following on social media (especially Instagram) and in less than two years was able to quit my job to go blogging full time. During this time, personal struggles aside, I was flourishing and was able to turn my blog into a profitable business, that allowed me to be my very own boss.

I was earning money from my blog and was able to work from home and on the go. I adored and relished the challenge of something new, and craved the excitement of a day filled with wonder and joy. Blogging allowed me to escape, blogging helped me flourish and above all blogging made me the person who I am today. Someone who is vivacious, ambitious and full of heart, who even in business is a quirky sort.

In short my blog was more than just a passion project or a side hustle, but a business that turned me into a badass entrepeneur, who could put her money where her mouth was. I created several blogging group communities, created influencer events on both a small and large scale basis, as well as being a speaker at workshops, conferences and summits and even founded my own joint podcast (outside of blogging)!

I was taught from research that it wouldn’t do to just rely on my blog alone, so early on I sought out new legit ways to make money from home, some of which are outlined below. Diversifying your income takes time, energy and sometimes pure luck so ensure that you are patient and trust that if you work hard, you will reap the rewards from your hard work, no matter how much time it takes!

Making Money From Home Is All About The Right Mindset 

While I am my own harshest critic, I want to remind you readers that the impossible does not exist and that no matter what industry you are trying to break into, anything is possible with the right mindset, drive and ambition. After all, I set up a business at a young age, and while I no longer blog full time, and work in the publishing industry, my blog is still very much my passion, drive and motivation.

I still make money from my blog, have seen my traffic triple in the last month and regularly get to work with fantastic brands, companies and agencies in my field, spanning genres like blogging tips, mental health, food and drink, dating and more. Blogging full time was an amazing experience, but due to personal circumstances I had to find another job, although I still love it when I get  the chance to be my own boss.

Now before we go any further, I don’t want you to think that this is a list of ‘get rich quick schemes’ that will see you make money at the drop of a hat, because a real business takes time and energy to nurture, before you even start thinking of monetizing your brand so its important to keep that in mind. I had to do a lot of work for free, and while it’s not something that I neccessarily reccomend, it did build my portfolio.

It also gave me testimonials that I could use in blogging and outside work, and above all helped me hone my craft and become a better blogger in the proccess. However, we now live in an age where blogging is a respected and renowned occupation, so it’s time that we stopped doing things for free. After all, we would pay photographers to take our images, and a writer to proof our content so why not bloggers too?

1. Use Affiliate Marketing To Create A Passive Income From Home

For many business owners, bloggers and entrepeneurs, affiliate marketing makes up a large percentage of revenue. Whether you use affiliate marketing through promoting a service that you find useful, use it to promote clothing hauls, blogging courses or to generate sales for your own product, affiliate marketing is a great way of generating passive income, when you are working from the comfort of your home.

For example I am part of the Rewardstyle program and the Amazon Associates Programme, which allows me to create product galleries within my post that enables my readers to purchase clothing that I am wearing in that article. This is a great affiliate program to be part of.

I can also link to home and beauty products, and have partnered with brands such as Ego and Superdrug in the past, to highlight my weekly product picks. When it comes to affiliate marketing, if you are a fashion blogger, its important to diversify your reach in order to diversify your income. So this means promoting your affiliate links via swipe up stories on Instagram, via Tweets and even in Facebook Groups.

You can also be part of other blogger’s affiliate programs and promote their services on your channels. By collaborating you can increase your exposure, and both parties will mutually benefit from the affiliate program. One of the savviest and most legit ways to make money from home is through having the sheer balls to create your own product and identify a gap in the market that you can fill. For example let’s say that you are a blogger who shares blogging and social media tips. You get a steady stream of traffic, have great social media engagement and following but feel like something is missing, as you are unable to blog full time.

You want to monetize your website, but feel that affiliate marketing and sponsored posts don’t quite cut the mustard. After all you have cats to put through college, and an extra hundred here and there isn’t going to make ol’ Tiddly Winks, the smartest cat of them all.

And lo and behold you have your bright idea. After searching your most popular post, you realize that your audience is searching for ways to increase their blogging traffic and boost their SEO. So your product is an affordable online course and workshop that aims to increase users traffic. This is your aha moment and you realize that designing your own product will enable you to diversify your income stream this year.

Look At Keywords That Are Associated With Your Blog And Design A Product Accordingly 

In another example, you are a lifestyle blogger like myself, who blogs about everything, so are looking to create a product that would solve questions that your readers are asking. As a case study, the type of keywords that have become associated with my blog include fashion styling posts like ‘What To Wear On A Second Date’, dating advice like quirky date ideas in lockdown, platforms that pay you to blog and blogging full time, meaning there is a wide variety of topics and keywords that are associated with my blog.

For example, as a blogger I have seen bloggers offer courses on increasing blogging traffic, avoiding legal issues in blogging, driving traffic to your blog from Pinterest and improving Instagram content.

So what you have to bear in mind is that there are hundreds of courses out there already so what can you offer that is different and will generate sales, boost traffic and give your readers/followers/ audience value? From creating courses on dating and relationships, to tips and tricks to improve your SEO, no matter what field of expertise you are in, there is an online course out there for you to tackle.

In Order To Sell An Online Course You Need To Give Your Audience What They Want

For example as I mentioned earlier, keywords that are associated with my blog tend to be centered around dating and relationships, blogging tips and social media and fashion, as I have been ranked as an expert in these fields by Google and my audience. Webinars, like online courses is a great example of a digital product that you can use to sell to your target audience, no matter what your niche is. Paid webinars are a fantastic way to build your target audience, share your experience and grow your business all at the same time.

A webinar is a smart way to make money online while working from home and using a website like WordPress makes it easy to not only host the live webinar, but also to advertise your webinar and register participants. This can be done through creating a landing page on your blog inviting people to join in your webinar, or creating an opt in or members only forum where you can register those who want to join.

For example a little while back I joined Carla Biesinger’s ‘Free Instagram Masterclass: From Popular To Profitable’, a webinar on Instagram growth, content creation and hashtag strategy, that while free, had a link to her Instagram Secrets To Success’ which was a paid for bundle, which she promoted at the end of the webinar for a heavily discounted fee.

I saw that many viewers purchased her masterclass, demonstrating the strength of using a virtual webinar to promote your services. Plus as the initial masterclass is free, it gives a taste of what’s to come, and she offers other services including an Instagram audit. So you see, by using free resources to attract a paying crowd, you are able to cash in on your expertise and make money talking about what you know.

What I mean by that is that in order to get paying customers to buy tickets to see you in action, you need to be confident in your own abilities because a lack of confidence will show. For example I myself don’t see many blog posts, courses or webinars on growing your following on Twitter, so that could certainly be an idea!

So let’s say we run with the notion that using Twitter to drive traffic to your blog, growing your following on Twitter and understanding what type of content, keywords and headlines generates tricks would be the basis for your virtual webinar. Perhaps you have 10 K followers on Twitter, regularly get viral tweets and want to share your secret.

This is where the magic starts and you can give your audience what they want!

I know quite a few bloggers who have used e-books to share their expertise and I think its a great idea. After all, this is something to add to your professional portfolio, means that you can officially call yourself an author and above all create a comprehensive guide for your readers.

Whether you create an e-book on recipes for gut health, tips for boosting your domain authority or are sharing dating advice, there’s a reader out there for you. For example, as someone who has written short stories and poems, my e-book could be on creative writing tips and how to get rid of writers block. Or I could share advice on how to master writing poems, how to write an autobiography and so forth.

If you are a blogger, you can look at it this way. First of all what topics do you talk about? As I am a lifestyle blogger I talk about mental health and wellness, travel, entertainment, food and drink, fashion, dating and personal stories. However seeing this extensive list of topics is overwhelming, so when it comes to writing an e-book you need to think about narrowing down on your niche e.g. dating and relationships.

So I would narrow down to three main topics which is blogging tips, self-care and wellness and dating. All three topics are very different so the next step would be to look at your top 5 performing posts and look at what they have in common. What are your readers searching for? What type of posts are you writing? How do your posts solve your readers questions? Look at your comments to get inspiration.

So you see the all-time posts are largely centred around dating and blogging/social media tips, meaning i’d need to create an e-book on that. Using my top 5 posts as inspiration, I can create an e-book on ’50 ways to make money from your blog’, ‘101 Amazing Date Ideas To Try This Year’ and ‘The Secrets To Instagram Success: Tips And Techniques’. This way your e-book gives the reader exactly what they are looking for.

An example of a good e-book that I have come across is from the brilliant Jenna Farmer, who is a freelance journalist and blogger, running two fantastic blogs; The Bloglancer  (blogging tips) and A Balanced Belly (Gut Health), as well as her Facebook Group.From pitching brands, to improving your SEO, Jenna has three e-books, including ‘The Freelance Writing Toolkit-Earn A Living From Your Words.

Jenna does a great job of enticing potential customers through offering excerpts from her book, alongside testimonials, which is a great way of showing that your e-book offers value to your audience and isn’t just empty words. After all there is nothing worse than click bait is there?

6. Design and Sell Social Media/Business/ Blogging Templates In Your Niche

Whether you are looking to design pinterest pin templates, have a blogging checklist template to help new bloggers or have an Instagram growth template, the sky is the limit, no matter what niche you are in. For example let’s say that you are a graphic designer and have consistiently created viral eye-catching pins that drive traffic to your website. As a result you create templates to help other bloggers.

I see this trending on Pinterest constantly, and there is a huge market for bloggers to promote their pinterest templates, as Pinterest is a visual search engine, like Google. A great example (as shown below) is by Online Blog and Business Help, who has five free pinterest templates that are fully customizable, and even better uses the free Canva format, meaning that you don’t need Canva Pro.

You can already see that there is huge potential to make money from social media by drawing customers in with templates. But that’s all very well and good but how do you go about finding what kind of template you need to create? Well first of, what niche are you in? What target audience are you trying to attract? What is the price point of the product that you are creating, will it have premium options?

How Can You Replicate The Success Of Popular And Profitable Templates?

So let’s take me as an example: I am a lifestyle blogger, publishing editor and freelance writer, who has her hands in many pies. Some might call me a jack of all trades, but I actually think it’s good to be diverse, because it means you can never run out of ways to make money, even if it is hard and it does take a while. So my niche is lifestyle, but I am looking to focus on blogging tips, because I know that this is what sells.

I am confident that I would be able to create a template that other bloggers could use, and as I am a writer, I would be looking to target bloggers, particularly new bloggers who need advice on how to write a compelling blog. I would keep the price point low as it’s my first template and I am looking to gauge the public reaction. The next step would be to figure out what you would create your template on.

As I am not a graphic designer, at the moment I wouldn’t be looking to design pinterest templates, as there are far better templates out there. 7. Write Or Film Tutorials And Include Affiliate Links

Similar to virtual webinars, entrepeneurs film tutorials on their chosen niche, which can include SEO, Instagram Marketing and Pinterest. While some entrepeneurs film free tutorials via their websites for suscribers to follow, other ways of curating tutorials can include writing a ‘how to guide’, which this legit ways to make money from home post is an example of, create a paid Facebook Group, with members paying a fee to access your tutorials or even through an online platform like Youtube. Although many tutorials are free, you often get what you pay for, so sometimes signing up to a tutorial that has stellar reviews, can help take your business to the next level.

For example let’s say that you are a photographer, and you have found that the pandemic has limited your shoot options and are looking for new ways to make money. Well, why not set up a paid Facebook group with comprehensive Facebook Lives, tutorials, resources, articles and a members forum, where your users pay a small fee to unlock the content. That way you can still take photos, through teaching tutorials.

The great thing about tutorials is that your audience can go back and replay the content over and over again, because they have purchased the materials. Even if it was six months down the line, the information would still be useful, particularly if you are teaching the basics like camera composition, ISO, lighting and editing with photo app softwares. So you see tutorials are also a form of evergreen content.

Another benefit of creating tutorials is adding more skills to your roster, which are highly attractive to potential employers or people who wish to join your team. This can include video editing, social media, filming and photography , marketing and running a business. 

So you have to bear in mind the following components when it comes to creating tutorials:

A) Would your audience be more likely to engage with written or visual tutorials? You could gather up a survey using blogging groups or create a shout on Twitter so that you can see genuine responses that would be helpful for your brand.

B) Figure out what you could provide a tutorial on. It has to be something that you are confident speaking on, especially with videos.

C) How much time and effort would you be putting into this course? Is it a taster course, or a full on 20 step tutorial? Who is your audience? All of these questions are important to bear in mind as it will help you identify your price point.

D) Speaking of tasters, if you are brand new to tutorials, it might be a wise idea to create a ‘taster tutorial’ that gives your potential audience a flavour of what to come, which then leads onto a paid tutorial that acts as a five day challenge type of format. As I said don’t work for free but at the same time you need to think about how you can people on board without having a portfolio. Does that make sense?

 

8. Write Sponsored Posts And Make Money From Home

This is where I get the majority of my blogging revenue, and I know for other bloggers that this is the same too. While some entrepeneurs excel in affiliate marketing, have their own courses or own a product to sell, sponsored posts are a really great way to make money from home.

Whether you get sponsored posts through blogging or even social media channels like Instagram, advertisements help boost your blogging income. Even if you are not a blogger and are a freelancer, you can still use sponsored posts to make money, by partnering with freelancing websites such as Huffington Post.

What Is A Sponsored Post?

First of all what is a sponsored post? Put simply a sponsored post is an article on a website or blog which is paid for by an advertiser. The content of a sponsored post varies, as you could be paid to mention a brand via a paid for link, be sent a product to review and money to endorse said opinion, or both. Sponsored posts can include genres such as recipe creation, fashion brands, app reviews and crafts.

There are also two main types of sponsored posts, which is via a content/ SEO agency or platform or working alongside the brand directly. For example via a content agency the pay tends to be a lower rate, although you would usually get more regular work, and the purpose of their sponsorship is to insert do-follow or no follow links within your blog article to give a link back to their client’s website or anchor text.

The content and SEO agency rate is also usually dependant on your domain authority. So for example if your DA is 30, you will get a higher rate than someone whose blog is DA 20. So while it’s important to not just get monetization via your DA and PA rankings, it is helpful.

Domain Authority And The Difference Between SEO Agencies & Brands

I at my DA peak-so to speak, had a DA of 44 (which is considered high), but during that massive MOZ DA change last year dropped to 31 and has fluctuated between 30-33 ever since. While it did have an impact on my earnings, the good news is that brands are starting to care less about your DA and more about your traffic, which in my case has never been better. This post is an example of an agency sponsored post.

With a brand or company, they tend to have a higher budget, but will usually expect more work, often asking for social media promotion alongside your post for a higher fee. If it is with an influencer platform they will usually take a percentage off your rate, so bear that in mind. With brands you will often find it will take 30 days to pay, whereas a content agency will pay within two weeks or less.

A great way to bring new users to your website, is through creating a job opportunities board, particularly if you are a freelancer, who wants to help bloggers get opportunities. While you wouldn’t neccessarily be charging the bloggers or entrepeneurs who use your job board, you can charge the brands and companies a nominal fee to advertise their services via your job board.

For example let’s say that you create a job opportunities board that is focused on getting freelancers more paid work. You act as a mediator by using your website to host companies adverts, and in turn develop a relationship with other freelancers and the brands that you are collaborating with. You post a weekly job opportunities thread and promote this via your newsletter, social media and Facebook Group.

While there are people who do this for free, this can be a savvy way of making money from home. An excellent example of a job opportunities board I have seen is by Jenna Farmer, who as mentioned earlier wins at being an ace freelancer. As shown below, the branding is cohesive, opportunities are posted once a fortnight, and she has a mixture of paid and gifting opportunities alongside contact details for you to get in touch. The board also contains useful pointers like resources on how to build a writing portfolio and a freelance writing toolkit.

10. Become A Freelancer And Pick Up Gigs In Your Chosen Field

If you are a blogger or entrepeneur chances are that you are also a freelancer because you offer a variety of skills ranging from graphic design to content editing right through to Search Engine Optimization. This means that because your toolkit is so varied, you have a lot to offer, which allows you to pick up gigs in your chosen field and make money doing what you are passionate about.

Find, Hone And Clarify Your Skills To Become A Verified Freelancer

For example let’s say that you are a blogger like myself who also has a full time job but freelances as well. When you have a variety of skills, you should focus on your five main selling points and how you can use these to attract business. So my five main selling points would be that I am a writer, an editor, a proofreader, a Journalist and a blogger, meaning that I can use these ‘job roles’ or skills to make a living.

You would then identify how you can use those five selling points. So as all these skills are associated with writing, you would presume that my special skill is being a kickass writer, who can write across a variety of genres. Once you’ve honed and chosen your skill to promote, think about what type of services are associated with the skill you can offer.

For example if you are writer, services that you can provide can include copywriting, blogging, resume and CV applications, proofreading, journalism, academic writing and specialized writing in industries like SEO, Science and IT. As I specialize in blogging tips, mental health and wellness, vegan and vegetarian living, dating and relationships and social media, I can use these genres to give valuable advice.

Look At Your Service Through The Lens Of A Consumer. What Would They Want? 

I am also an editor in the Pharmaceutical publishing industry, so could also specialize in medical writing, but as I am more confident in the other topics, sometimes it is better to offer services that you genuinely feel will be useful. The way that you can look at it is to think about how you as a paying customer would want these services to be designed. Do you want a premium product or a product with budget value?

Other factors to take into consideration is does this service solve all your needs, is it good value for money? Does the service i.e copywriting look like a professional business and does it have testimonials? Will they give you detailed feedback and help you improve your own skills?After all when I’m purchasing a product the three things I look for is quality, relevancy and durability. These factors should be noted.

Now that you have found your skill and have identified how a paying customer would approach the product, you can then start designing your services. You might use Canva to create promotional images, or use other apps like Photoshop, Lightroom or even Paint. The key is to make your service branding look professional, ‘on brand’ and above all look like it will sell your services to your target audience.

Think About Your Language Copy And Use Power Words 

The example below shows how a good ‘service image’ should look. You should also take into consideration the language and copy that you are using. For example use enticing, persuasive and descriptive ‘power words’ to draw the reader in such as ‘You’, ‘Trust’ and ‘Immediately’.

You is a great power word, and in my opinion is the most powerful advertising term that you can use because you are directly addressing the potential buyer and making them feel like they are part of the narrative. When ‘you’ is used in advertising copy, the reader feels like they are included and that the page they are browsing speaks to them. By using the word ‘you’, the campaign instantly becomes more powerful.

Trust is another great example of a powerful word. Give your business prospects the opportunity to trust you, and ensure that you will not be letting them down. While they might have been let down in the past, your services will give them the clarity and reassurance that they need.

And finally ‘immediately’ is a power word that evokes resolution, rapid action and urgency. It works because most customers want their problems solved without delay and want a quick fix. You can use this to your advantage by always keeping on top of your orders.

11. Create, Host And Organize Your Own Small To Large Scale Events

Creating your own events is no easy feat, but from personal experience I can tell you that it is very rewarding, as readers who have attended my events would know. Whether you create small, intimate gatherings, medium sized conferences or large-scale events, event management is an example of legit ways to make money from home. In this current climate you can even create ‘virtual events’ or summits in your niche.

In order to set up your own event, you need to think about what type of event you are looking to put on, including the genre of the event, the size of the event, the price point of the event and who your target audience is. For example, I will give you a case study of two influencer and blogging events that I have organized since I started blogging, one intimate and small, the other large-scale, which you can read below.

Case Study One: A Small Event For Micro-Influencers To Connect & Collaborate

I co-founded a blogging events company called London Blogging Events, which was tailored to creating events where micro-influencers could come together and collaborate, attend workshops and have the opportunity to connect with brands who were looking for bloggers to connect with, regardless of following.

We created our events because we were tired of seeing talented smaller bloggers sidelined and wanted to celebrate them and show them that they had value and worth. As a result our company was born and within a few weeks our first event was live. In preperation for the event we used social media to market our event, and kept the price at an affordable rate, while looking into an event space that was accessible.

Think About What You Need To Make Your Event Work

In order to create said event we had to think about the following logistics: what type of brands we would bring on board, how we would cater to dietary requirements, what the pricing of our tickets were and what our target demongraphic would be. Because our events company was centered around inclusitivity, we also took into account whether our location was wheelchair accessible, whether the area was somewhere that was easily reachable by train or bus and if the brands worked with a diverse range of bloggers regardless of following, age or ethnicity.

When it came to choosing brands we not only looked at their brand statements and the types of bloggers that they worked with, but also whether we shared the same values and ethics. For example we wanted to make sure that the brands wanted to collaborate with us for the right reasons and weren’t just looking to ‘sell and advertise’ their products but actually wanted to work with the bloggers (paid + gifted).

If You Are Partnering With Brands Make Sure That They Are Relevant

It was important that the brands also had products that were relevant to our audience, and we chose a mixture of brands for the ‘stalls’ where they could showcase their brand and connect with the bloggers, and also for the personalized goody bags which we gave to each blogger. As I am vegetarian and cruelty free we only had vegan and vegetarian food, and worked purely with cruelty free brands with the same ethos.

Alongside the branded stalls, we also had workshops with influencers and PRs on topics such as growing your following on Instagram, an instagrammable flower wall, a GIF photobooth and giveaways and prizes to give out to our bloggers which was fun. The event was a success.

The event worked because it had a clear target audience i.e. micro-influencers, had a clear theme and an affordable price point and was educational, fun and well put together. Our event was ticketed on EventBrite and was promoted mainly through Twitter and Instagram.

Case Study Number 2: The Large Scale Party For A Brand 

For the large scale event which hosted 200 influencers, I partnered with Adexe Watches to do their event management, and while this was only my second ever event, the crowd seemed to eat up what we were offering.

As this event was for a brand, there was a lot to take into consideration, including creating a list of London bloggers to invite, who were a mixture of micro & macro influencers, who aligned with the brand vision, putting together the brands who were sponsoring the giveaways, prizes, food and drink stalls and providing the entertainment. This was everything from a mini spa station to a tattoo booth which was fun.

As this was a large scale event it worked a little differently to the first event that I put on. The preperation was of course immense and we had to think about factors such as dietary requirements, accessibility, diversity of influencers, goody bags, branding, value to bloggers and brand and of course looking at this as a campaign to drive traction, sales and raise awareness of the brand. We also needed a good hotel.

Remember Location, Entertainment And Value Is Key When Running Events

As a result each influencer was gifted a watch from Adexe Watches, with a goody bag given at the end sponsored by the brands. The location was at the Moxy London Stratford, so was a great central location for everyone to get to, and we had a bed decorated with props like giant teddy bears, with a panoramic camera printing out photobooth photos, and a GIF sent to your phone for you to enjoy. We also had a DJ, entertainment from dancers, as well as a professional photographer capturing the key moments.

Other highlights included the rooms decked out with props, balloons and mischievous glamour, the mini spa, tattoo station, glitter and face painting booth and food and drink from our sponsors. Whereas the previous event was designed for collaborations, this branded event was more of a party to bring influencers together and get them talking about Adexe Watches in a fun and happening environment.

So you see from these two case studies above, creating events is another example of legit ways to make money from home, and can be extremely rewarding. While they are hard work to put together, no matter how big or small, it is something I reccomend all entrepeneurs try. After all, how else do you get the message out about your brand? And like I said earlier, digital events are all the rage at the moment too.

12. Look Into The Future And Start A Popular Podcast

Podcasts are all the rage these days, ranging on topics from sex and relationships to entrepeneurship, making it the ideal platform to make money from home. Whether you create your own podcast, run a podcast with someone else (like I do) or create a weekly podcast series with a number of guests, podcasts really are an up and coming way to make money remotely and become your own boss.

Case Study: Chicks Talking Drag- A Drag Race Themed Podcast

As someone who runs a Ru Paul’s Drag Race themed podcast called ‘Chicks Talking Drag’ (which you can listen to here), creating your own podcast is a fantastic way to have a laugh, educate your audience, share your opinions on your chosen subject and just have a good ol’ chingwag. Depending on the subject of your podcast, these audio recordings can be lighthearted, joyful and feel good which is what we need.

In our case, our podcast was ‘drag themed’ because we both had a shared passion for drag queens and felt like it was something that we could have a natter about over a glass of wine (or two). We weren’t doing it for the money, but simply out of passion and it was much for ourselves as it was for our audience. And this is the exact mindset that anyone should have: passion, joy and happiness as the founding principles.

We were creating a weekly podcast ru-viewing RPDR UK (Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK), discussing our critiques of the runways, judges comments, mini and maxi challenges and our thoughts on how the contestants performed that episode. In short it provided our audience with a fun overview of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK and is completely unconnected to what we both do as a profession. It was a lot of fun.

When it comes to creating your own podcast, it does not neccessarily need to be related to what you do as a business. As long as you are passionate about what you are talking about, have an audience you can target your podcast towards and create a consistient posting schedule, that is all that matters. Our podcast was and is a passion project and improved our hosting, speaking and editing skills.

We had to take the following attributes into consideration when creating Chicks Talking Drag:

A) What platform would we host our podcast on, to reach the right audience? In the end we chose Spotify as our streaming platform as this is where the majority of our audience would be. We didn’t care about the views neccessarily, but it was nice to see our audience grow. We also hosted our podcast on Tune In and Apple Podcasts to give our audience a variety of platforms to choose from.

B) Who was our audience? Our audience wasn’t set in stone per say, but it was targeted towards anyone who loved drag and wanted to feel like they were hanging out with friends when they were listening to our podcast. Our audience is welcoming, accepting and open-minded.

C) What could we offer that was different to drag race podcasts that were out there? There are plenty of fantastic RPDR podcasts including Race Chaser by Willem and Alaska, so we wanted a podcast that celebrated the new RPDR spin offs including RPDR UK. This way we could give our fresh take, especially as we lived in the UK ourselves and could explain slang to our international listeners.

D) What were we looking to get out of this podcast?  As I mentioned, this was not about the money and more a chance to hang out, have fun and educate the children henny. However as a long-term goal once we have improved our speaking skills, structure of the podcast and feel more confident creating episodes, we are looking to bring on guests and in the future take our podcast on tour, creating money opportunities.

If You Are Looking To Make Money From Your Podcast Listen To Your Audience

There are of course other factors to take into account when creating a podcast, but ensure that you are passionate about what you do. For example let’s say you decide to start a podcast which you intend to make money from, and want it to be an asset to your business portfolio.

I’ll take myself as a case study. I am a blogger who is passionate about mental health, blogging and social media, sex, dating and relationships and social issues. I decide to focus on sex, aiming to dispell the myths, stereotypes and negative press around women being open about sex and bring on sexperts as guests on my podcast. While sex podcasts are nothing niche, I make it personalized to me and my audience.

This is through bringing my own sexual experiences into play and touching on topics such as the ‘female orgasm’, using toys in relationships and de-stigmatizing open and frank discussions around sex and sexual health, creating a frank and open discourse around sex and women. While you would start your podcast without monetization, you can quickly transform your talks into paying events and going on tour.

By going on tour I mean travelling to different cities and hosting a podcast live, with the chance for audience to answer questions and even give you feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the podcast and what they want to see from you next. Perhaps they’d like to see more discussion on sex in relationships, or maybe they are looking for a particular type of guest to go on our chat show.

Be Open And Receptive To Audience Feedback

The key takeaway here is that in order to make money, you have to give the audience what they want. Listen to feedback, be open to (constructive) criticism and ensure that any information that you give is well articulated, well thought out and gives sound advice. Because your audience can help you shape your content and allow you to improve your podcast in a natural and organic way.

13. Become A Public Speaker At Workshops, Webinars And More

One of the most legit ways to making money from home is by becoming a public speaker at workshops, webinars, conferences and summits. This can be through ‘hosting’, being a guest, a ‘panel judge or expert’ or a speaker, sharing expertise on your chosen subject e.g. blogging. For example, I have been a speaker, a panel expert and a host at all four types of events. I will share three case studies below.

Case Study One: Performance In Marketing Conference 

The first was a large scale conference in Central London on affiliate marketing, ad networks and influencers, run by Performance In. While I had never done anything like this before, it was a great way to jump straight into the deep end and offer my views as an influencer, in a crowd which was dominated by affiliate marketers, CEO’s and Account Managers.

It gave the audience an insight into affiliate marketing from an influencer’s point of view, while I offered my honest opinions on how influencer networks can improve their rate of pay, how they carry out their partnership and how they can improve their transparency, contractal agreements and dealings with influencers. Questions were asked from the audience and the panel host, which we answered.

You Need To Listen To And Respect Other Speaker’s Opinions 

What I learned from this conference was that in order to be a panel expert, you need to listen carefully to the other speakers, while respecting their opinions, because everyone is different. You can use their answers to intelligently and respectfully offer your own opposing views, while being daring to ask the questions that the audience want to know, and giving them what they want. I also learned to be a better orator.

Case Study Two: Blogger Workshops 

The second case study is an example of two workshops that I was a speaker at. The first was a ‘bloggers-meet up workshop’, whose aim was to inspire people to start blogging, with fashion experts on the panel (including myself) who have managed to monetize their passions.

Smaller Gatherings Work Better For Workshops 

It was designed as a small intimate gathering, asking questions about the secret to success, how you can diversify income streams and using social media to reach a wider audience. This was a small event, which meant that the audience had an exclusive and intimate chance to connect with the industry experts, which made them feel comfortable and at home, while the content we provided was semi-structured.

What I learned from this workshop was that workshops are better on a smaller scale, because they are designed to tell a story, solve a problem and get testimonials from an intimate crowd. You are able to connect with your audience on a deeper and closer level. In contrast a large scale conference is designed to educate and inform your audience, while building your connections, experience and fee.

To Make Money You Need To Teach Others How They Can Make Money Authentically 

The second workshop was also centered around blogging and monetization, albeit to a slightly larger crowd. It included three fashion bloggers who were blogging full time (including myself, although i’m no longer a full time blogger), and was designed to teach the audience about blogging for beginners, what influencers should be charging for campaigns and how to approach gifted and paid campaigns.

Our aim was to give our audience tips on how to define their niche, teach them to diversify their income streams and not rely on one channel to make money. For example if you are an Instagrammer then consider creating a blog, or design your own product to make money. It was very much a Q&A type format, with structure, which allowed us to give our audience useful information. Questions were asked at the end.

Both workshops demonstrated that in order to make money as a speaker or a host, you need to create content that you would pay for yourself. It has to be a mixture of informal and formal discussions where you can make your audience laugh at the same time. The main purpose is to inform, educate and entertain, while keeping your prices affordable to reach a budding blogger crowd.

Third Case Study: An Advisory Board Meeting 

The third case study is a little niche. I was invited as a guest of Affiliate Summit to be part of a panel discussion with marketers around the world, in a round table style advisory board meeting. The purpose of the meeting, hosted in Amsterdam, was a closed door invite only format with 20 / 25 people brainstorming around affiliate and influencer marketing trends and challenges in Europe.

It was an open space hosted by a moderator where there was no topic agenda and us as marketers would come up with topics to discuss in small groups. Conversations were recorded through notes, which were released in a report to a group of participants. These types of summits are a great way to make money because you are acting as a ‘study participant’ and are offering vital information for the purpose of a report.

Your Audience Need To Be Able To Identify You In A Crowd

The main takeaway from being a speaker at a workshop, summit. conference or meeting is that you need to be well versed in your field so that you can contribute to the discussion effectively, be able to come across in a confident but reassuring manner and be able to tell a story that has one liners that are memorable making you stand out. It’s important that the audience can relate to you and identify you as a speaker.

14. Start Your Own Consulting Business Or Become A Coach

Starting your own consulting business is a great way to make money and whether you are a freelancer or a blogger, you can easily become a coach and work for yourself. Before you start a consulting or coaching business you need to think about the following:

A) Repeat Business Is The Key To Success. Ensure that you deliver on your promises and don’t oversell what you are giving your customers. For example if you are offering your customers a Pinterest Audit, don’t make outlandish sweeping statements like telling them they are going to get 1 million views on their account, with 500,000 blog visitors and a growth of 200,000 + followers on Pinterest.

All of your consumers are different so be realistic with what you will be able to achieve for them. You could tell them that you will improve their traction and click throughs by cleaning up their Pinterest boards, improve their Pinterest SEO and connect with relevant pinners to increase their following. You can also give them case studies of what you have achieved with previous clients if you have them.

B) It’s Better To Over-Deliver Then Not Deliver At All. As a consultant you want to make your customers happy, so it’s important to go above and beyond to exceed the customers expectations. In my case I always do more than what is being asked of me to increase  my satisfaction rate with my customers. It’s better to give more than to underperform and create an underwhelming service for your client.

C) Work With Clients Who You Feel You Can Actually Help. I see this all the time but as a freelancer there are many clients who you end up having to cut ties with because they are unprofessional, difficult to work with or are asking for a lot for very little money. Choose clients who you have synergy with, because you will be able to do a much better job for them and satisfy all their needs accordingly.

Case Study: Amber Temerity, A Blogging Consultant

For example Amber Temerity (who runs the group Pinterest Pals) is a blogging mentor and marketing strategist, who offers services such as a Pinterest Audit, mentoring for bloggers, email list growth and Facebook marketing for business owners. She is a great example of a blogging and social media consultant who has demonstrated that repeat business is the key to success, through diversifying her services.

She ensures that she only takes on a certain number of clients per month, arranges one to one consulting sessions with her clients and streamlines blogging for bloggers who are in need of expert advice to hone their content to make money and increase their reach. By limiting the number of clients she takes on, she is able to give more of her time and not feel like she is too burnt out to offer a quality product.

Customers Love Personalized Services That Are Catered To Their Needs

By streamlining your consulting and coaching services, you are more likely to get positive testimonials because your clients will feel like you are giving them a personalized service tailored to their needs and requirements, giving you the ultimate thumbs up that you need.

Admittedly coaching or consulting is not the easiest way to make money, but is a profitable way to become an entrepeneur and be productive when working from home. In short coaching teaches you how to be a marketer, how to design your business and how to make a profit. Coaching also allows you to escape the 9-5 life, take steps to being your own boss and in time can allow you to create your own team.

15. If You Have A Blog Or Website Work With Ad Networks Such As Mediavine

Regardless of whether you are a blogger or entrepeneur, if you have a website, you have the freedom to work with ad networks like Mediavine.Joining an ad network and placing ads on your blog is an excellent way to earn passive income. Generally speaking, the more traffic you have, the more money you’ll make with ads. Ads networks have different requirements to join which will be added below.

How Do Ad Networks Work?

Ad networks will typically pay you based on Cost Per Thousand (CPM) or Pay-Per-Click (PPC). Cost Per Thousand means you will earn a certain amount of money for every 1,000 impressions (views) the ad receives. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) means you will receive a certain amount of money whenever the ad is clicked on. So if the PPC is 50P, you will get 50P everytime someone clicks on the ad.

Ad networks usually have a minimum traffic threshold to join, which will refer to the number of users you have, as well as sessions that you have on your blog each month. You would need to check these stats via Google Analytics. The requirements for ad networks are listed below.

Five Ad Networks For Bloggers To Join 

1. Mediavine – This is an ad network used by a lot of bloggers that I know because it offers the highest pay outs in the shortest amount of time. Unlike other ad networks sessions are their metric of choice because it establishes how the audience engages with your content.

Mediavine requires you to get 50,000 sessions a month, which roughly works out as 60,000 page views. This is quite a high number of sessions to achieve and if you are a smaller blogger can seem like an impossible goal, believe me I should know! However for bloggers who use Mediavine, they cite the ad network as being great to work with, because they vet the ads used and make them relevant to your audience.

Once you have been accepted, you are paid 75 days from the last day each month, and are paid via Paypal.

2. Google Adsense– Google Adsense is good for new and intermediate bloggers because it’s fairly easy to join and does not require a minimum number of page views. You are also paid monthly around the 21st of each month so you know when to expect your pay.

However you need to have earned $100 minimum in order to get paid which is quite a high threshold which other networks don’t have.

3) Monumetric– Formally ‘The Blogger Network’ , Monumetric needs a minimum of 10,000 page views a month and has 4 monetization programs. The first is Propel for 1o,000-80,000 page views per month, the second is Ascend (80-500 k page views a month), the third is Stratos (500 K – 10 million page views per month) and finally the fourth is Apollo (10 million + page views per month).

4) Media.Net– Media.Net is a contextual ads program powered by Yahoo and Bing, with a huge advertising pool. It is an alternative to Adsense and has a minimum payout of $100 like Google Adsense, which is paid via Paypal. It is ranked second after Adsense.

5) Ad Thrive– Ad Thrive have their own ad network that displays family-friendly ads, plus they set up DFP (Double Click For Publishers) on their ads once they’re installed on your blog. Although it has a waiting list, it is a good ad network to join if you get a sizeable amount of traffic. It has two stages: AdThrive Edge (100,000 + views) and Premium (750,000 + views) with customized ads for you to use.

16. Create Your Own Private Paid For Community Or Forum

Last but certainly not least is creating your own private paid for community or forum in your niche. For example let’s say that you are a Pinterest account manager who is looking to target bloggers who need help boosting their impressions, pin graphics and reach. As a result you create a private members group on Facebook for all your clients, where your VIP members can get top access to exclusive resources such as click worthy pin templates that are guaranteed to go viral, Pinterest audits and Facebook Lives where you do informative Q&A’s.

Private Groups On Facebook Create A Collaborative Community 

Because these group members have already purchased your services, they are given access to these resources for free, which will give them an incentive to join your paid for community. You can build a thriving online forum and in turn these members will reccomend you to their friends and family, increasing the demand for the services that you are offering. The more bonus content that you provide, the better.

While there are a variety of forums available to host your paid for community, I would reccomend Facebook because it has the largest reach. After all there are almost 2 billion users and Facebook is the biggest social media platform to refer visitors to your website. It therefore has the most potential to increase revenue for your services and people are already using it so it makes complete sense.

Plus Facebook has a huge emphasis on ‘community’ by using its AI to funnel more people into high-engagement groups. So when you see reccomended groups pop up on your Facebook, these are reccomendations that are curated by AI technology. They take into account how active members are in the community, the level of interactions between members and admins and how content is being used in the group.

Ensure That There Is Criteria In Place So Members Know How To Interact

For private paid for forums, there is of course criteria in order to be admitted into the group, which naturally builds a stronger community. This is because you aren’t just letting anyone in, and this exclusivity is more apparent with a paid group, because all members will be using the group seeing as they have paid for your services. You can use this to answer users questions and give one to one coaching sessions.

Like any group you need to ensure that you have guidelines in place, so that your members know what they can and can’t do in the group, and that all rules are met. Creating some sort of behavior expectation is essential for creating a safe space in your community.
